How to build a raised vegetable bed

If you are feeling boring in your leisure time, and you have sufficient a place in your yard, then you can start to prepare a vegetable bed to grow your favorite vegetable. After deciding to make vegetable beds in your yard or garden, then you may face problems such as poorly draining soil. Collect the following tools and materials and follow the following steps to build the vegetable bed.

 

 

 

 

Tools and Materials

•    4X4 posts
•    4 1X12 boards
•    Nails and screws
•    Topsoil
•    Plants
•    Soil amendments
•    Post hole digger
•    Hammer and drill
•    Shovel
•    Spade
•    Spading fork
•    Garden hose

Step 1 – Determine the place

Determine the place where you will make the vegetable bed. You have to choose the place according to the kind of the vegetable. If the vegetable plants which you want to grow need more air and sunshine, then you have to choose such a place where the plants will get sufficient air and sunshine.

Step 2 – Building the frame

Now build the frame to make the bed. You have to set the 1” X 12” boards to make the frame. Then mark the corners of the frame, and dig holes in each corner to set posts. After digging the holes place a post in each hole. Then stabilize each post by pressing the soil firmly. Then place the boards and attach the boards to the posts with nails or screws. If you think that you want to plant more plants then you can build larger frames to create a larger bed.

Step 3 – Loose the soil

Now take the shovel or the spading fork to dig the soil that is inside the frame. Dig the soil around a depth of 12”. You dug the soil to allow the plants getting water. Digging will help the plants taking sufficient water from the soil. When you will water the plants, water will easily reach at the roots of the plants. Properly dug soil also helps the plants to take other necessary ingredients from the soil easily.

Step 4 – Apply soil amendments to fill the frame

Now take the sufficient amount of soil amendments to fill the frame to make the vegetable bed. Soil amendments may contain humus, manure, and sand. You can mix the materials according to the need of the plants that you will plant. A mixture of rich soil and nutrients will allow the plants to grow quickly, and you will get rich vegetables from the plants. Properly prepared soil also provides good drainage and tasty vegetables.

Step 5 – Now plant the plants

After doing all of the above tasks the bed is ready to plant the veggies. Take the plants and lay the plants in such a way that they will get sufficient space to grow up. You can collect the instructions from the shop from where you bought the plants or seeds. Sometimes instructions are provided with the packets of the seeds. You should dig holes big enough to plant the plants properly. Then plant the plants carefully and backfill the soil. Then thoroughly water the plants. Apply support where necessary.
